Our Story

Unleashing the Next Chapter (UtNC) was founded by Kathryn McClatchy. Initially launched as a blog in 2012, it soon evolved into a platform for Kathryn to apply her unique blend of marketing, coaching, and literary expertise to help authors and creatives succeed. As her skills and reputation grew, so did the client base, including local, national, and international clients from various creative fields. By 2018, UtNC had grown into a boutique virtual agency, further solidifying its goal to provide excellent digital marketing services to creative professionals across the globe.

  • 2012: Kathryn McClatchy launched the “Unleashing the Next Chapter” blog, marking the beginning of our journey in empowering creative entrepreneurs.
  • 2016-2022: UtNC successfully managed marketing, social media, and special projects for WORD–Writers Organizations ‘Round Dallas, including WordFest, Writers in the Field, and WordFest SW.
  • Jul 2018 – Nov 2019: As the Social Media Manager for Bouchercon2019’s 50th anniversary gala, we helped expand their brand and achieved the goal of doubling their social media following. Our efforts led to a 122% organic increase in followers (Facebook: 143%, Twitter: 25%, Instagram: 631%) and engagement from all continents.
  • July 2019: The UtNC Writers Community was founded, creating a supportive space for writers to connect and grow.
  • April 2022: The UtNC Writers Community organized and coordinated the award-winning Next Chapters Unleashed: A Beachy Anthology.
  • July 2022: We expanded our reach by launching the Authorpreneurs Unleashed podcast, providing valuable insights and conversations to “demystify the business of writing.”
  • October 2022: UtNC rebranded the Writers Community as the UtNC Creatives Community and transitioned it to a Discord server, fostering a more inclusive and dynamic environment for all creative entrepreneurs.

Kathryn McClatchy
Digital Marketing Strategist,
Owner of UtNC

Meet Kathryn McClatchy, a natural-born storyteller who has been crafting tales since childhood.

Her career has taken her from writing for newspapers and magazines to the world of advertising, marketing, and market research. She’s also had the privilege of teaching high school and college courses in Composition, Rhetoric, and Literature.

Kathryn is the founder and facilitator of the annual Writers Guild of Texas Flash Fiction Contest, and host of the UtNC Creatives Community on Discord. A teacher at heart, she enjoys public speaking, conducting workshops and writers retreats, and mentoring creatives. Always up for a challenge and learning by doing, Kathryn is a member of Toastmasters and is co-DM of a large virtual D&D party.

Kathryn loves spending time with family and friends, volunteering at church, and is always ready to travel. She is happily addicted to books, tea, chocolate, and houseplants, not consistently in that order.

JoLynn Elkins
Social Media Marketing Assistant, Audio Engineer, & Podcast Editor/Co-producer

On a field trip when JoLynn was just 10 years-old, she visited a university broadcasting building and saw the wall of controls. Filled with displays, meters, switches, levers, dials, buttons, and lights, it left her in awe and made her say, “I want to do this when I grow up.” That day she realized two things: her love for gear and the collaborative spirit of communications.

Years later, JoLynn earned her Associate of Arts in Radio & Television Broadcast and worked writing and producing ads at a radio station. Her passion for audio and tech gear still burns brightly, and she keeps her skills current through online courses.

Now, as a homeschooling mom, JoLynn loves learning and field trips alongside her kids, sustainably growing both plants and animals, and treasure hunting near eclectic tea and book shops.

Phillip McClatchy
Video Editor & Marketing Intern

When questioned about his marketing experience, Phillip humorously responded, “Having spent over 18 of my 30+ years living with my mother, Kathryn, I’ve absorbed a wealth of knowledge through osmosis.”

Putting nepotism aside, Phillip thrives on embracing new experiences, acquiring fresh knowledge, and blending music and creativity in his video editing projects. He’s proficient in DaVinci Resolve, OBS Studio, and other video editing software. He finds immense satisfaction in tackling challenges and devising practical solutions to problems. Always a team player, he’s eager to contribute to the growth of UtNC with the hopes of it evolving into a family business.

In his spare time, you can find Phillip playing the piano, guitar, and harmonica, or sculpting and painting. He also loves spending time with his dogs or horses, hiking, camping, and fishing, and sharing stories about his adventures.
